We’ve just finished editing the first three 30 minute Car & Driving shows. The series will coming soon to a 3D cable or satellite channel near you!

Here’s the 2D version of the teaser on Vimeo….

And here’s the 3D version of the same thing on You Tube.

Don’t forget you can change the way 3D displays on You Tube by clicking the gear wheel icon so if you have some anaglyph (red/blue) glasses knocking around, these will work fine if you make the right adjustment! And if you DON’T have any, please contact us using the form below and we’ll be pleased to send you some!

Written and presented by Jonathan Crouch, these half hour shows are packed with info and each features one great supercar. More tasty cars to come, we promise!

Directed and edited by Ian Sandall with title GFX by Matt Thompson.

Film and Video production is what we do at SPL and we’ve always made TV commercials. Recently, we’ve finished this TV commercial for Davies Paints in the Philippines.

30 and 15 second ads for a new formaldehyde-absorbing wall paint by Davies called CleanAir were co-written and directed by Ian Sandall from an original creative concept by Big Idea’s Robert Taylor. They were cast and shot in The Philippine capital, Manila whilst post-production was handled back in the UK both in-house at SPL and by leading Manchester post-house Editz.

This is the second TV commercial from the combined forces of Big Idea Asia and SPL for Davies Paints having previously worked together in 2011 to create the successful ‘Walls in Fashion’ campaign.

SPL’s Ian Sandall commented: ‘Asia’s growth continues at an amazing pace and The Philippines with a population of almost 100M is a rapidly expanding market.’ The new TV commercials feature a family suffering from the effects of formaldehyde which is released from fabrics and furniture in their home and goes on to show the result of re-painting with Davies CleanAir paint. Not for nothing is the commercial titled ‘Happy Family’.

Sandall continues: ‘We worked closely with Big Idea to ensure the TV commercial was carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of the local market, demonstrating our ability to work global and think local. For the local Philippines audience the TV commercial hits all the touch points and will stand out in a busy ad break yet is totally understandable to an audience who don’t necessarily speak English all day.’

Post-production was completed in just 8 days at Editz by a six strong creative team.

Editz Creative Director Rob Pickard added: ‘Ian Sandall came to us with the offlines and we took it from there with individual members of the team working on separate elements, all of them being combined daily on Smoke. Basically every frame of the ad has been treated in CG and combined in Smoke, so it’s a real achievement to deliver this on schedule against a tight deadline. It was also fun working on an ad for a completely different market.’

The commercials will transmit during the two main decorating seasons in The Philippines.

Here is the 15 second version:

Ian Sandall concludes: ‘The Philippines is a great place for filming TV commercials with a wide variety of beautiful locations like pristine jungle, wonderful tropical beaches and plenty of Western-style architecture. It also has the advantage of offering great weather most of the year. It also has good studio facilities, well-equipped equipment rental houses and experienced crew at cost-effective prices. I can really recommend it to any Agency looking for a different look for a TV commercial!’

Making TV ads is all part of the business to us and we are used to working with statutory authorities in the UK and abroad to arrange approvals and clearances. If you’d like to know more about this or any other of our 3D or 2D productions, please get in touch using the Contact Form and we’ll get right back to you.

SPL Communications produces TV commercials and corporate videos and has recently commissioned and opened the North’s first 3D edit suite especially for exhibition and corporate productions.

It’s certainly been a long time since we started shooting this video! I looked back at the original set of rushes the other day and to my amazement saw that they were shot in October 2010! Now, a year and several edits later it’s complete and I’m pretty pleased with it.
A year – in music terms? Well of course that’s a long time in ephemeral pop music (plenty enough time for boy bands to rise and fall and rise again ….) but music like this really doesn’t date that much – after all the whole Kuschty Rye project is in the style of the late great Ronnie Lane who sadly departed this earth some time ago!
You can learn more about Des Horsfall and Kuschty Rye <a href="http://www.kuschtyrye.net"target="_blank">here..

Recently we have been doing some more 3D model work in conjunction with our pals at Stalwart.

These sculptures were filmed on the motion control rig in a special and secret (!) process that we’ve developed over the last few months; this enables us to get true 3D images in a rostrum/motion control environment. However there ARE size limitations when shooting in the studio (and with Marjan’s work, weight limitations too – these are all bronze!) and so the largest piece we could shoot (Small Mother Goose) is still pretty small compared with some of her larger works.

You can see more of Marjan’s art <a href="http://www.marjanwouda.co.uk"target="_blank">here.

If you’re interested in 3D filming of anything like this (of course it doesn’t have to be sculptures – it can be anything) please get in touch with us!

PS: If your computer, mobile or TV is 3D-enabled – well done! If not, to view this you’ll need some 3D glasses. So ask us and we’ll post them to you!

Manchester, 26 July 2011

SPL Communications brings 3D edit suite to the North West

SPL Communications, the video production company based at Manchester Science Park, has opened the first 3D edit suite available for corporate use in the North West.

The suite runs the latest Cineform 3D software – Neo 3D, and has been developed over the last few months to offer a stable, cost-effective solution to producers and industry clients wishing to take advantage of the latest innovation in TV production.

Clients can benefit from SPL’s full 3D production service or choose to bring in their own footage to be edited. The system can work with files up to 4k resolution, including those from RED and Phantom digital cinema cameras.

SPL Managing Director, Ian Sandall, commented: “I believe the future of film is in 3D, which is why we have gone to great lengths to develop one of the first 3D editing facilities outside London specifically for commercials, corporate and exhibition use.”

“The technology behind this exciting new format is evolving at such speed, with most major manufacturers developing cameras, TVs, computers and mobile phones to support it, that 3D is now becoming a viable and appropriate choice for the corporate and exhibitions market. By investing in this new facility, we are making sure that the North West doesn’t miss out on the chance to capitalise on this game-changing opportunity.”

“With the advent of MediaCityUK, we are seeing a boom in creative and digital industry in this area, but we need to ensure that the cutting-edge tools of the trade necessary to compete with more London-centric companies are accessible to local businesses at competitive prices.”

“Until now, the cost of 3D production was beyond the reach of all but the largest corporate clients. Now we can offer a complete 3D production for not much more than the cost of a comparable-quality 2D one. That’s great news for corporate clients, exhibition companies and regional advertisers.”

SPL Communications works with a number of clients internationally, including PZ Cussons, Davies Paints and Kids@Play. The company has recently launched a new website to showcase its work:

We’ve just finished editing a new showreel with lots of examples of 3D footage. Some we’ve shot and some we’ve borrowed from our colleagues in the industry. So big thanks go out to everyone who contributed. Too many to list here but they are all on the credits of the video.

A number of people have asked how the system works. Well it’s based on Premiere Pro with a whole lot of software on top – this is by Cineform (www.cineform.com) and it’s called Neo 3D. Editors who’ve worked on Premiere find the 2D > 3D transition easy. Basically once you have your 3D files assembled and muxed, you edit away just like a normal PP project but can view everything as you go in 3D. Finally you can output in a variety of formats and burn BluRays or distribute files normally.

The fie that plays here is in You Tube’s 3D format. You’ll need to have a 3D-enabled TV with internet access or a 3D computer to view properly; however if you have some red/cyan anaglyph glasses. you get an impression – but only an impression….. And if you don’t have any3D glasses, please contact us using the form and we’ll be delighted to send you some attractive cardboard ones!
