Our reel consists of various tests as well as actual programmes we have made and/or edited in-house using our state-of-the-art 3D edit system and shot by our own team of experienced sterographers and camera people.

Over the last few months we’ve invested heavily in 3D, so now we are fully equipped to offer a turn-key service for corporates, commercials and programming.

Everything made in 3D is also immediately available to use in 2D, so our recommendation would be to shoot in 3D now to future-proof your investment!

Recently we have been doing some more 3D model work in conjunction with our pals at Stalwart.

These sculptures were filmed on the motion control rig in a special and secret (!) process that we’ve developed over the last few months; this enables us to get true 3D images in a rostrum/motion control environment. However there ARE size limitations when shooting in the studio (and with Marjan’s work, weight limitations too – these are all bronze!) and so the largest piece we could shoot (Small Mother Goose) is still pretty small compared with some of her larger works.

A number of people have asked how the system works. Well it’s based on Premiere Pro with a whole lot of software on top – this is by Cineform (www.cineform.com) and it’s called Neo 3D. Editors who’ve worked on Premiere find the 2D > 3D transition easy. Basically once you have your 3D files assembled and muxed, you edit away just like a normal PP project but can view everything as you go in 3D. Finally you can output in a variety of formats and burn BluRays or distribute files normally.

The fie that plays here is in You Tube’s 3D format. You’ll need to have a 3D-enabled TV with internet access or a 3D computer to view properly; however if you have some red/cyan anaglyph glasses. you get an impression – but only an impression…..  And if you don’t have any3D glasses, please contact us using the form and we’ll be delighted to send you some attractive cardboard ones!

Obviously this is just a taster of the work SPL does. If you have a particular style of production in mind, chances are we may have done something similar in the past and we would be delighted to put together some examples for you.

The whole shoot was shot against green and white screen

What we had to do was to make a short film to intrigue and inspire a group of people and leave them with a very simple yet powerful message.  Simple? Not really – the time we had to deliver it was counted in days not weeks!

We decided on what appeared to be a very simple concept – a presenter talking to camera. However we had the idea of all the captions (and lots more) being reacted to by the presenter. Easy enough? Well judge for yourself. The whole shoot was storyboarded and then each scene was plotted out so that the presnter’s actions would match the motion graphics.

A great presenter, a super-quick crew and an understanding Client helped things progress quickly and some late nights and a bank holiday weekend in the post-production house (using Fire, Flame and AE) did the trick. Shot on a RED and a Canon 7D (technical note: Can you tell which shots came from which camera?) this has proved to be a wildly successful campaign with initial sales up 28% after 6 weeks!

Rather than importing people from the UK, we used a local production company and local crew to deliver a cost-effective production with a short lead-time. We’ve got another Davies commercial coming up soon – watch this space!

Behind The Scenes:

Ian’s Behind the Scenes cut takes a quick look at how complex this shoot really was with two long days of shooting and a crew and cast of getting on for a hundred. Models were shot on green screen and the backgrounds composited afterwards in post-production.

To recreate a Trading Post in 19^th Century Africa we created an atmospheric set with some amazing props. As this was being shot, our tireless Art Department was also building a complete 1940’s lab next to it. You’ll see both of these featured in the film. Also, our wardrobe and make-up people surpassed themselves with their attention to detail to create some truly memorable scenes.

The later shots in the film – the ones from around the world (the UK, Greece, Nigeria, Thailand and Indonesia) were also filmed by SPL – all in high definition. On a whistle-stop tour of several territories on one eleven-day shoot we took 8 flights including two overnights!
